Former Chief Operations Officer of the USS Dauntless (NCC-74214). He had retired from Starfleet service in mid-2389, but was recalled to duty only two and a half months later due to escalating tensions with the Klingon Empire. Six months later, in the spring of 2390, while attempting to assist Risian authorities control civil unrest, he was killed in action.

Biography
Early Life
Andaryn was born on January 14th, 2366, in San Francisco, California, Earth to two non-joined Trill parents, Kenntus and Keldari Velksyrn. His mother, Keldari, was a Starfleet officer then assigned to Starfleet Headquarters, while Kenntus, was a sculptor and stay-at-home father. Until the age of six, he lived in Half Moon Bay, California, and his earliest memories are of the times his family spent walking along various beaches along the Pacific Ocean, and being taught to fish by his godmother – and dear family friend – Commander Jessica Anderson. Three years later, in 2369 Andaryn's brother, Jayal, was born.
In 2372, with tension between the Federation and Dominion rising, his mother requested, and was granted, a transfer to a Starfleet relay station near Trill and so the family moved to the planet and his mother joined them there when she wasn’t on duty. The time, however, was a difficult one; especially when the Dominion War began a little over a year later.
The terrible casualties that Starfleet suffered became personal to the family when Keldari lost both her legs after an attack against the relay station by Breen forces, in 2375. Kenntus took his wife’s injuries hard, and became a strict disciplinarian on his boys. And though, Andaryn knew that both his parents loved him, it was not an easy childhood after this time. Being the elder brother, he took it upon himself to protect his only other sibling from his father’s strict rules and punishments, and this began the intensely close relationship between the two boys.
Academic Life
Ever a bright child, it was to no one’s surprise that Andaryn breezed though much of primary school – though his parents suspect he stalled his own rise in the third grade because he had a crush on his teacher – and continued at an astonishing pace through secondary school.
He entered the Trill Science Ministry University (TSMU), in 2381 at the age of 15 and truly reveled his time there. In his first year, he discovered a love of the stars and enrolled in a combined astronomy degree and physics degree program. Finishing in three years, he was on his way to a third specialization in subspace spacial dynamics when he made the decision to try and become a joined Trill.
Joining
With the extreme competitive nature of the host selection process, Andaryn was very surprised when his application was provisionally accepted that same year, in 2384. And though it wasn’t until successfully completing the countless physical, psychological and personal tests that he was fully accepted, his surprise remained up until the day of his hosting surgery.
After he was joined with his symbiont, he learned the real reason for the haste was that, while the Symbiosis Commission was impressed with the young man’s many academic achievements, the Valow symbiont’s elderly host had specifically requested Andaryn as soon as he learned of the young man’s application.
Surprisingly, and frustratingly, Andaryn cannot access those memories and the symbiont refuses to reveal anything on the subject.
Starfleet Academy
Despite his brother’s strong disapproval, Andaryn entered Starfleet Academy shortly after his joining and found the experience both extremely exciting and terribly boring. While all new to him, the Valow symbiont had gone through countless years of schooling and – like many other new hosts – Andaryn often found this internal contradiction quite confusing. Eventually he learned how to separate past from present memories and that skill has served him well ever since.
At the academy, since Starfleet is always looking to encourage resourcefulness, the young man’s extensive academic training was utilized and Andaryn was made a cadet-instructor of introductory physics after completing his Initial Officer Training. Thriving in the role, the Trill decided to change the focus of his future career from science to command, and switched his major from Subspace Physics to Operations, though he kept his minor in Engineering.
It was in the Academy, however, that Andaryn learned of his love for spaceflight. As a required course, Shuttlecraft Piloting was something that he had dreaded ever since he had arrived; worrying about some unnamed failure ruining his chances to serve. However, once he got behind the controls of a shuttle he found it hard to step away from them. After the class he took every opportunity to fly, joining several student organizations that allowed him more time in various shuttlecraft, runabouts, and other auxiliary vehicles ranging from Academy flight trainers to work bees. He briefly considered once again switching his major to Helm and Navigations, but though he chose not to, upon graduation he did apply to Starfleet’s advanced fighter pilot training program. His application was rejected due to a large number of applicants that year but he was encouraged to apply once again following further practical experience.
Cadet Cruise
While on his cadet cruise aboard the Nebula-class starship USS Prometheus (NCC-71201) the vessel was called to assist in the search and rescue of a dozen missing colonists on Coltar IV.
During an unrelated trip to the surface, the cadet discovered five survivors; the only remaining ones of the original twelve. However, due to electromagnetic interference, caused by a severe planetary storm, Andaryn was unable to contact the Prometheus and elected to remain with the survivors. Despite various incidents, including being assaulted by a delusional colonist and suffering through the extreme cold, all six were rescued several days later by an away team from the Prometheus led by Ensign Frederic Larsen.
For his actions, the cadet was awarded the Star Cross.
However, Andaryn's tour aboard the Prometheus was cut short upon receiving his permanent assignment from Starfleet Command.
Service Aboard USS Endeavour
The Trill's transfer to the USS Endeavour (NCC-82000) from the Prometheus was somewhat unexpected, but very welcome as it marked his graduation to full Starfleet ensign. Arriving at Spacedock aboard a tramp freighter, where the Endeavour was moored, Andaryn was immediately set to work as an operations officer aboard one of Federation's newest, and most powerful, vessels.
It was at the Endeavour's first stop at Hellesport Station where Andaryn met his future wife, Shiloh jey'naS Christiansen - the station commander. And after a brief, but intense, romance the two were married by the station's Chief Security Advisor James Convenient amidst the starlight of the transparent conference area at the top of the station.
Following the ship's exploratory mission at the black hole at 59 Virginis, and return to Spacedock, Andaryn co-discovered (along with Ensign Breener) the microorganism contaminant which had infested the Endeavour's deuterium fuel system. He was also on the team (with the aforementioned Breen officer, and a fellow Trill, Ensign Edmon Zoren) which was assigned to provide a solution to the problem.
Shortly afterwards, he was promoted to Lieutenant, J.G. and assigned to the position of Deputy Chief Operations Officer, and Quartermaster of the vessel.
As a newly minted lieutenant, Andaryn's first mission was to lead an away-team down to the planet Kalandara. The residents were of a recently post-warp culture who were seeking admission into the Federation. However, Andaryn got caught up in a dilemna when his values clashed against the Prime Directive regarding the death of an innocent young Kalandaran. Choosing to side with his morals, he saved the woman, by beaming her aboard his leased private runabout, the Independent, parked aboard the Endeavour. However, in addition to the young woman, Ara, the transporter picked up a large predatory beast which was attacking her. Though the Trill suffered terrible wounds attempting to defend the Kalandaran and prevent the creature from escaping, it was set loose aboard the Endeavour's flight deck. Eventually, he and Commander Jason Ikas, were able to kill the creature, but only after receiving near mortal wounds which endangered both himself and his symbiont.
For his actions, Andaryn was relieved of duty. However, perhaps understanding the reasons for his crime, Captain Ikas and Lt. Commander Serendipity McKennery - the Endeavour's executive officer - championed the young officer against the JAG Corps and prevented a general court martial. Instead, the Trill was sent to the Captain's Mast where he eventually received the sentence of probation and confinement to the ship for a period of three months.
It was not long after this that the Endeavour, this time under the temporary command of the operations officer, was sent to Alpha Centauri VII to assist in the containment of an outbreak of the Vargian Flu. Though the crew was able to provide both humanitarian and security assistance to the planet, an accident aboard the vessel caused an antimatter containment breach and the ship was destroyed. Though, nearly all the crew was saved, the loss still weighs heavily on the Trill. However, grief was compounded on top of grief when he later learned that Ensign Kari Linnet, an engineer and a friend, was one of those who lost their lives.
While coping with his loss and waiting for reassignment aboard Spacedock, Andaryn was assisting other former Endeavour crewmembers who had found a crude bomb aboard the station's arboretum when the bomb went off. Though relatively small, and causing little damage to the station itself, Captain Ikas, Lieutenant Valow, Lieutenant Zoren, and Ensign Stilcho Desch'ain were injured when the security ensign prematurely triggered the device while attempting to disarm it.
Service Aboard USS Okuda
Just as the men and women of the Endeavour were transferring to their new assignment, the USS Okuda (NCC-75234), the entire crew received a terrible shock. Lieutenant Simon Freud the Chief Operations Officer of their former vessel was found to have killed his new wife Lieutenant Trina Zaud, Endeavour's Chief Science Officer. Despite the terrible event the crew was required to press forward and ready their ship for service. To help do so, Valow was promoted to full lieutenant and assigned the position of Chief of Operations of the Intrepid-class vessel, as he was already familiar with the bulk of the ship's complement and the command crews' methods.
One of the first missions of the new ship was to investigate strange power readings from a primitive culture on Baugaus VI, however, the officer was to miss most of this mission as his marriage was coming to a quick and unfortunate ending. Their differing nature, the stress and demands of each of their jobs and the fact that they couldn't be together for any significant period of time, all contributed to the ending of the short marriage.
It was during the divorce process, however, that it was discovered that Shiloh was missing from Hellesport Station. Having just been usurped as Station Commander by the Ferengi owners of HP, everyone assumed that she was just taking an unannounced vacation. Yet days turned to weeks and there was still no word from her. Andaryn informed Captain Ikas of his worries and the Centaurian, agreeing that it was suspicious assigned Valow, Doctor Talek Vorm, Lt. J.G. Frederic Larsen, and Lt. J.G. Serina Amore to investigate. However, after nearly two weeks the team found no evidence of foul play and were forced to transfer their investigatory duties to Hellesport Station Security.
Upon his return to the Okuda the Lieutenant sought to isolate himself for a time, and requested removal from bridge duty. Instead of his normal work, the Trill spent the next several weeks working on a new internal alert system which would improve the efficiency of the crew in emergency situations. However, due to technological limitations, it was not possible to implement the system in an Intrepid-class starship and he was forced to concede temporary defeat.
His return to bridge duty could not have been at a better time though, as the Vargian Flu crisis had taken a turn for the worse. With a half-dozen Federation worlds, and millions already dead, Starfleet was spread thin.
Following the loss of the USS Venture (NCC-71854) the Okuda was assigned to assist the infected world of Bajor, taking over from Deep Space 9 which was already overwhelmed by coordinating relief in the Gamma Quadrant. Though, the planetary government had requested the medical aid, religious zealots - led by Vedek Yarra Sarmed - were roused to attack the Starfleet teams sent down to the planet's surface. In one such attack, Andaryn fell victim to an insurgent ruse and attempted to aid someone he thought had the deadly Vargian Flu; for his efforts he was shot at nearly point-blank range by two Bajoran religious extremists and seriously injured.
Following his recovery, the operations officer continued to coordinate the relief and counter-insurgent efforts. During this time Captain Ikas, promoted the Trill officer to Lieutenant Commander and elevated him to the position of Second Officer of the Okuda; in addition to his regular duties as Chief Operations Officer.
However, it was not long after this that a series of seemingly unrelated events sent the crew of the Okuda spiraling towards disaster. Following the failed attempt to assist the Bajoran people, the ship was tasked with escorting a convoy of the rare berkelium element from Highland Station, in Unican space, to Spacedock, around Earth. The two vessels in the convoy were the UTG Dunlop, a large freighter, and the FSS Seeker-of-Stars, a Caitian scout ship converted into a trade vessel. Enroute to Federation space the convoy was attacked by the OSC Oxis, a Galaxy-class starship that had been stolen by the Orion Syndicate several years before. The much larger starship swatted aside the Okuda, devastated the Dunlop, and raided its holds of all of the precious cargo. Though the Seeker was able to escape unharmed, the loss of the large freighter meant that less than one-third of the material necessary to synthesize the flu vaccine was delivered.
This demoralizing event was followed by a member of the Q Continuum deciding to play a 'game' with the crew. This Q would release some of the greatest villains known to the crew and it was up to the Okuda to discover them. At stake, were the lives of billions as the Q promised that if the Starfleet crew was victorious it would eliminate the current plague of the Vargian Flu. Yet only after seizing two of the released evildoers, one the notorious Adolf Hitler and the other a more personal villain out of the life of the executive officer, Commander Serendipity McKennery, the crew received word that there was evidence of an incoming OOR attack.
The dreaded foe of the Federation seemed intent on attacking Betazed again and as such Starfleet gathered the 6th Tactical Fleet under the command of Fleet Admiral Andrew Brinks in the Beta Veldonna system. But after over a week of waiting, when the OOR arrived, they arrived as the tide. Instead of a handful of OOR Dreadnaughts the fleet was faced with dozens of them. At the end of the battle, the Okuda was only one of eight surviving ships, out of twenty-seven.
Yet this carnage was not the worst of the OOR's handiwork. Instead of attacking the planet's surface as they had tried the during the first Battle of Beta Veldonna, the OOR ships instead used a powerful technology to instead implode the star at the center of the system into a black hole, plunging the planet of Betazed - inhabited by billions into frigid darkness.
The evacuation of the planet began simultaneously with the end of the battle. Though a call for assistance was made, initially the eight surviving starships - some of them nearly cripple - crammed as many civilians of the planet below as they could into their hulls before withdrawing for repairs. The Okuda herself remained behind until the arrival of the 10th Tactical Fleet and 12th Medical Fleet led by Rear Admiral Jessica Jameson.
When the relief force did arrive, less than a day later, the Okuda - also brimming with Betazoid evacuees - headed to Deep Space 9 for critical repairs before carrying on to Krellix Sigma III. The planet, in the process of being terraformed, and Seldakor would be home to the millions - if not billions - of Betazoids cast out of their homeworld. The trip to the developing world was uneventful, as was the disembarking of the evacuees; however, the return to Betazed would be far too eventful.
The first impact against the hull of the ship, as it journeyed back to the dying world, was as unexpected as it was brutal; the second tore a gaping hole in the aft portion of the bridge; and the ones which followed were equally unforgiving. Within moments primary systems were failing and the blaring klaxons of 'Abandon Ship' could be heard in all parts of the doomed vessel.
Though, only 10 were lost, the crew mourned 11, as the Okuda was another friend gone.
The initial investigation led most to believe that the ship had fallen victim to the mysterious, but powerful, spatial anamoly known as a quantum filament. However, never one to merely accept things, Andaryn began an investigation of his own. Over the course of a few days, he gathered and analyzed as much evidence as he could acquire. When he finished his work, he came to a surprising theory: the Okuda had been attacked!
Unfortunately, the theory was wrong.
This was pointed out to him by Commander McKennery and Captain Ikas, when he informed them of his theory regarding the destruction of the Okuda. However, his work did lead the three of them to a far more likely, and even more ominous conclusion. The ship had been sabotaged from the inside by one of their own crew-members.
Service Aboard USS Dauntless
Yet, with the Betezed crisis still foremost in everyone's mind, there was no time for discovery or investigation. The senior staff of the Okuda was reassigned to the the aging Galaxy-class starship, USS Dauntless (NCC-74214). While all thought that the ship would be a tremendous help with the evacuation effort, the vessel's tired engines and systems could not make more than one trip filled with evacuees from Betazed to Seldakor before requiring extensive maintenance and a comprehensive overhaul at Spacedock.
...
Valow retired from Starfleet in July of 2389. He stated that after he spent some time with his family, he had an offer to work for the planetary government of Trill and expressed his interest in pursuing a political career.
After leaving the Dauntless Andaryn returned to Trill where he spent the next couple of weeks staying at his parents' home, enjoying the time visiting with them, his brother, sister-in-law, and niece. All too soon, however, with tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire rising, the planetary government of Trill assigned the new civilian to be the government's liason to Starfleet. Andaryn was given the title of "Assistant Military Attache" and sent to Earth where he spent two months working under the Military Attache, General Unlas Paxtar. His job primarily consisted of coordinating the planetary defenses of Trill with those Starfleet forces already in the sector. However, just as the former officer was getting into the role, the tensions between the two great empires escalated with the destrucion of a a Federation relief convoy on its way to the Klingon occupied Cardassian territories.
With a destructive conflict almost assured, Starfleet began to recall reserve officers to fill vacant posts aboard starships and starbases. One such post was the Chief Operations Officer post aboard the Dauntless which had not been filled in the interim and the logical choice for Starfleet was to put the former office holder back into place. Using the "little-known, seldom-used, reserve activation clause," Starfleet drafted the Trill, who was returned to his old ship within 48 hours.

Personal interests
Fishing
While he has fished for almost his entire life, the young man has never caught a single fish. Nevertheless, it is a pastime he greatly enjoys and would never give it up, despite his utter lack of success.
Music
Despite having absolutely no talent in playing a single musical instrument or singing, Andaryn loves all types of music and his collection is as wide in variety as it is large in number.
Running
Keeping a compactable treadmill in his quarters, Andaryn has been able to keep in shape no matter where he has been. Not a fanatic about fitness, he instead simply enjoys the simple, physical nature of the activity.
Valow Symbiont
General
The Valow symbiont is relatively young when compared to some other symbionts, only having a total of six hosts over three centuries. The symbiont was killed along with Andaryn in April, 2390.
Past Valow Hosts
Galeis
Hosted from 2085 through 2154 – A moderately successful prospector who spent most of his life alone on his stake. Known as a famously stubborn man, he was the first host of the symbiont. Though he spent very little time with others in general, since he lacked the ability to cook, he often hired someone to perform the task for him. He died at the age of 89.
Morbisiar
Hosted from 2154 through 2179 – Having hid his intentions from the Symbiosis Commission, he became a mercenary for hire. After successfully pursuing that career for over twenty years, he rejected war and became a farmer before being assassinated by one of his many enemies. It is common knowledge that he chose not to engage in any sexual relationships until after he left his soldier's ways behind him. He died at the age of 47.
Malana
Hosted from 2179 through 2186 – The shortest of the Volow hosts. Malana was a successful merchant who… aided… the Symbiosis Commission’s decision in selecting a new host with the help of a sizeable donation. Shortly after being joined she was awarded a monetary award from a shipping company when a luxury cruise liner she was aboard was stranded in deep space for nearly a month. However, not very long after acquiring the symbiont, she suffered a massive seizure – possibly due to an incompatibility with Valow – and in order to save the endangered lifeform, Malana sacrificed her own life. She died at the age of 32.
Keldari
Hosted from 2286 through 2299 – The longest of the Volow hosts, she serendipitously acquired Valow at the age of 16. After Malana’s death, the teenager was the only one within range who was biologically compatible with the symbiont. After a difficult adolescence, Malana grew to be a musician of incredible caliber, learning to play several instruments in addition to mastering her own voice. She was well-loved by both her fans and critics alike, being asked to play at several venues throughout the Federation. She died at the age of 129.
Andaryn is not descended from this former host, his mother was only named after the famed musician.
Syllandar
Hosted from 2299 through 2384 – A skilled attorney even before his rather unexpected joining, Syllandar became one of unparalleled skill afterwards. After serving many years as a defense attorney, he became disillusioned with having succeeded in freeing many guilty people, and became a prosecutor. He remained in that position until he was nominated to become an adjudicator on the Trill Judicial Council where he served until the time of his death. He died at the age of 105.
