Flight Training Transcript
This page is not a comprehensive guide to coded piloting in Holotrek, but only intended as a aid to those interested in the subject.
Overview
The following is taken from a log of an actual in character (IC) flight training that took place inside HT. Permission to use the log was gained at the time of the training, and the log has only been edited for publication purposes.
Descriptions and out of character (OOC) comments have been separated from the text, and coded commands given by the instructor have been highlighted for the convenience of the wiki reader.
Though this takes place aboard a Starfleet vessel, "codedly" the commands apply to all vessels, regardless of Organization.

Durango Docking Port (Deck 8) <USS Endeavour NCC-82000>
This is less of a room than it is a glove-like holding compartment for a Durango-class Runabout, the ship's medium- and long-range support vessel. The smooth walls of this bay are made of the same black alloy as the rest of the ship.
The bay door is closed. You see the USS Durango NX-82044 here.
Obvious exits: [ Forward <f> ]
[INTERCOM] Valow's voice says, "Lt. Zoren, and Ensign Amore to the Durango Bay. Repeat. Lt. Zoren, and Ensign Amore to the Durango Bay."
The door to the forward opens.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren arrives from the ventral service corridor.
Ensign Serina Amore arrives from the ventral service corridor.
The door to the forward closes.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods to Valow, smiling warmly. "It's good to see you again, up and around that is."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Hello sir glad to see you up and about."
Valow nods at the pair. "Thanks. Limbo is a terrible state to be in. But such is life. And I'm aware of the choices I made."
Valow gestures towards the sleek runabout. The former operations officer looks out of place in civilian clothes, and he sounds even worse. "Edmon, this is going to be redundant, but bear with me. This is a Durango-class runabout, prototype, but going to be standard aboard all Endeavour's. Serina, it's a little different than a regular runabout so that's why we're here."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, "My first performance was less than stellar if I remember."
Ensign Serina Amore nods as she holds herself more formal.
Valow notes Serina's posture and in his current state it annoys him. "Lets head onto the bridge." He says aloud.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, following the ex-Ops officer.
Ensign Serina Amore follows immediately dropping the posture.
A warning siren sounds in the room as the bay door opens.
Valow walks into the open hatchway of the USS Durango NX-82044.
The Corridor <USS Durango NX-82044>
This is a narrow corridor running the length of the ship. At one end of the hallway is the ramp and airlock, at the other end if the doorway to the bridge. Along the corridor, there are two doors, one on the left side of the ship and one on the right.
Obvious exits: [ Bridge <b> | Conference Room <cr> | Quarters <q> | Exit <o> ]
The door to the bridge opens.
Valow heads to the bridge.
The Bridge <USS Durango NX-82044>
The control area of the vessel, this room sports long sloping forward windows and sleek ergonomics. There are four duty stations set up although it's quite easy for a single capable pilot to to operate the craft. Off to one side, a two-person transporter platform is set up; at the rear of the bridge, a door leads to the primary corridor to the rest of the vessel.
You see the pilot's console and the copilot's console here.
Obvious exits: [ Exit <o> ]
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren arrives from the corridor.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren takes a seat at the co-pilot's console without being asked.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren mans the copilot's console.
Ensign Serina Amore arrives from the corridor. Valow gestures Serina towards the pilot's console. Ensign Serina Amore mans the pilot's console.
The door to the bridge closes.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren is sitting in a relaxed position, not actually facing the console, but turned toward Valow instead.
Ensign Serina Amore looks over console.
The dark-skinned Trill mans the unused tactical console, and turns it to face forward, "Edmon, again, bear with me regarding anything you already know, since I'm going to be starting from the basics." He gestures towards the consoles. "Since Durango was meant to be piloted by one person you have to know a bit of everything, so the first thing you'll do when you sit down is: 1) Type engstatg.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Ok done."
"That will give you a list of all the systems aboard ship and their power status." Andaryn points to the red indicators. "This means the system is offline. The 0% indicator next to it means that it has no power." He points to the top of the screen. "WCCF is the containment field, SIF is the structural integrity field, and life support is just that. Those three systems always have to be online always. /Always!/ Whether docked, or in flight."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods that he is ready as well.
Ensign Serina Amore nods.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren asks, "What's IDF again?"
Valow presses a button, which expands the abbreviation: Inertial Dampening Field. "Another power requirement you must keep up when in flight."
"You can reduce power to these systems /if you have to/ but they must stay online." He points to another indicator on the screen. "This means that engineering safeties are online. If they aren't, put them online. 2) engset safeties <on|off>. I /still/ keep the safeties online aboard the Independent." The relieved officer's now notorious runabout.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, "With good reason."
"There are two ways to power a vessel up. Manually or via a profile. To do so manually, the command is: 3) engset power <system> <0-100>. And you'd need to do that for all the systems you need. For now, Serina bring the warp core to 100% and Edmon bring the impulse drive to 100%. Now the advantage to this is you can save a lot of power to systems you aren't using. Like say you don't expect to transport anywhere, you can leave that system powered down. That leftover power is then shunted back into the warp drive which increases your maximum sustainable warp speed. To determine that. 4) navinfo. And to see the details of the drive system, 5) enginfo.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Ok I brought the warp core online but it said "Warp core now at 0%."
Valow nods pointing to another indicator: Engineering mode: Automatic. "Because the system is in automatic mode - which is normal, it automatically allocates where power comes from. The two sources are the fusion reactors and the warp core. Because the system doesn't need much power it's only using the reactors, and the core is at 0%. So think of it as percentage being used, as opposed to status."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Ah I understand."
"Now the quicker way to bring a vessel online is to use profiles. These are preexisting power configurations in the system. To determine if the system /has/ profiles type 6) engset profile list. And I don't remember offhand what Durango has, so if you don't mind reading them to me, Edmon."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren reads off, "Umbilical, standard, emergency, and landed."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Available profiles are umbilical, standard, emergency and landed." stops and looks at Edmon "Sorry."
Valow nods, "So... I suspect now she's on landed. So the quickest way to bring her online would be to type 7) engset profile load <profile name>. So load standard, Serina, please." He gently ignores the faux pas, smiling slightly thinking she's just excited. /Or nervous because she doesn't want to be taught by a criminal./ Valow says, "You can create your own profiles by using engset power, to make the power settings you want and then 8) engset profile save <new name>. But when you're on a public vessel such as Durango, or Endeavour, please label it with your name attached, something simple like Amore01."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren watches the console.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Negative I read 23% sir."
Valow raises a brow, "What's at 23%, Serina?" Rises and leans over the Ensign's shoulder.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Fusion reactors."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren looks at the console curiously. "I think they're just warming up."
Valow nods, understanding, and agreeing with Edmon, "So that's pretty much along the same lines as the warp core. The console indicator isn't a status percentage, but how much of the fusion reactors are being used."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "it may have been my fault sir I entered the wrong profile first but corrected it immediately however it may be why there’s a discrepancy."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, "It would probably increase if we, say...do this." He taps at the console, turning on ASR sensors." Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, "Like that."
"Once the fusion reactor's reach a certain point, the warp core will kick in." Andaryn sits back down and types a message to Endeavour flight control. The console beeps indicating clearance. "Active systems are good because they extend your range, give you more detail, and are even necessary for some systems. Like ASR (active short range sensors) for establishing a transporter lock. But the downside is that they use a /great/ deal of power and are easily detected."
<OOC> Valow says, "conversely ALR = active long range sensors; and PSR/PLR = passive sensors equivalents"
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, pointing out, "And sensors take a great deal of power as well, if I'm not mistaken. Which explains the increase when I powered them up." He powers them down as he says this.
Andaryn nods. "And again the more power you have to spare, the higher warp you can maintain." He gestures at the power controls indicating currently used warp power. "Which makes sense because the more power being diverted from the core to other systems, the less power it can use for speed."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods.
Valow says, "Serina, launch us, please. 9) launch."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Well everything looks like it's online now save for shields and weapons."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Aye, sir"
<Outside> With a hiss, the hatch on the USS Durango NX-82044 closes.
The ship gently lifts off the ground and flies out through the bay doors into space.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren points out the changing power settings on the console. "And now that we've lifted off, we're using more power. Hence the increased consumption by the fusion reactors."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren . o O ( Stop interrupting Zoren. )
Ensign Serina Amore smiles and says, "Perhaps now’s not such a good time to mention I get space sickness."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren chuckles, turning to Valow. "She sounds like me."
Valow . o O ( Please be joking. Edmon will start if you do. )
Ensign Serina Amore stifles a laugh
Andaryn smiles... faintly. "Head's in the back." He points to the passenger compartment.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Nah, no one to hold my hair back for me."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren laughs softly.
Ensign Serina Amore glances back at Valow. "What no offers?" She shakes her shakes head "I must be losing my sex appeal."
Having recently been in a fairly awkward situation, the dark-skinned Trill isn't in the mood for flirting... /No matter how cute I thought she was when I first met her./ "No. Now bear in mind that on these consoles you're going to be getting the full spectrum of information because this vessel is only designed for a limited crew. So you're getting engineering information, tactical, helm, and so on. Serina, aboard a starship you're probably used to a lot less." He gestures to a different set of systems. "You can amend that by typing 10) cmdset. That will give you a list of systems that can link to your current console. You link them by typing 11) cmdset <system>. But remember, /always/ reset the console to the default when you're done. 12) cmdset clear."
Ensign Serina Amore drops smile and immediately turns back to the con.
"But on a small vessel like a runabout or shuttle, you'll get it all."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren sets the console to his liking.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Aye sir"
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren taps the console, pulling up the nav information.
"To start with, you want to get a bearing of what's around the vessel, 13) fullscan. That will give you everything that the ship's sensors can detect. Remember, it's not everything that's out there, but everything that the sensor can detect. That will depend on the vessel's sensors, and what you're trying to scan. Cloaked vessel? You won't have any luck."
Ensign Serina Amore asks, "I assume that’s you routing power Zoren?"
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, "The active sensors.”
Valow says, "Other scans are more specific 14) engscan , sciscan , navscan . Each has its own function, and each can be focused. So, engscan <contact> will give you engineering details of a vessel, station, etc. Sciscan <contact> will give you scientific information. But perhaps more importantly to you both, is navscan <contact> will give you a list of landing sites on a location."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren says aloud to no one in particular. "I wasn't aware that sensors couldn't penetrate the Endeavour's hull."
"The reason for that is classified information, Edmon."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren keeps talking, "Though I probably should've known." Then turns to Valow, saying in all seriousness. "You're not going to ask us to land you on the planet are you? Cause I think that would be a /really/ bad idea."
Ensign Serina Amore shakes head
Valow smirks faintly. /I ought to get Iya./ Aloud. "No, Edmon." /*Your* career is safe./
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren responds to Valow, "I appreciate that. So let's ditch this sand pit, shall we?" Edmon changes tactics, "Or perhaps it's safer to stick close to home. With hearings pending and all..." He trails off.
Valow nods, "We'll stay in the neighborhood. Now Durango's autopilot - like every other ship's - is the easiest place to get from point A to point B." He rises again, and brings up the autopilot on the pilot's console. "15) navmem . That will give you a list of every contact currently in Durango's navcomputer."
[...]
Andaryn ignores the conversation between the two, and makes a note to apologize to Serina later, but for the moment continues, "I doubt anyone's had the time to put Kalandara in the system so Edmon, if you wouldn't mind. 16) navmem contact <name of contact on sensors> <label assigned in navcomputer> . So keep it simple. Something like Kalandara."
Ensign Serina Amore pointedly stares at console
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, doing as asked. "Done."
"Now, lets start with ETA (estimated time of arrivals). To check the ETA for a point /already in/ the navcomputer from the ship's current position the command is: 17) naveta mem <navcomputer label> at <speed> . Where speed is either 'Impulse <1-100>' OR 'warp <1-9.999>.' For example Edmon check the ETA to Earth at warp 9.851. Serina, find out Durango's top speed by typing, navinfo, and then find out the eta to Earth at our top speed."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren chuckles saying aloud. "At full impulse, we would reach Earth in 9 months, 16 days, 19 hours, 23 minutes and 40 seconds."
Valow frowns slightly, again not in the mood. "And what I asked, Edmon?"
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren says seriously, "14 minutes and 40 seconds, si..."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Keeps saying invalid speed"
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Oh. I was typing in the impulse commands."
Valow nods, "It's a new interface. You'll get used to it."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren asks Serina, "What's that ETA?"
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Ok ETA to Earth at 6.964 is 2 hours, 45 minutes and 6 seconds."
Valow nods, "Good work you two. Now... if you make an error or need to delete an old contact you can by, 18) navmem del <navcomputer label> . It's rare that you'd need to, but it happens if someone has manually inputted a contact in the wrong location or if the contact is something like a rogue asteroid which is mobile. You can learn about manually inputting contacts in the instructional manuals which you two should have copies of... correct?" The ex-ops officer looks at each in turn.
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods.
"Well now that we have the basics down, lets get this thing flying. Serina, power up the warp drive." Andaryn says.
Ensign Serina Amore glances over readings.
"Almost exclusively you'll use the navcomputer to travel. So the way to set a course is 19) navset autopilot mem <navcomputer label> . You can also use the autopilot to steer to sensor contacts, 20) navset autopilot <sensor contact> , or to absolute spatial coordinates, 21) navset autopilot <coordinates>. " He continues, "It's rare that you'd use coordinates, but sometimes it happens when we head somewhere new. Like to Kalandara for example. So for now, Serina, set a course for Earth."
Ensign Serina Amore smiles glancing down at her console.
Valow nods, "So, now type navinfo. And you'll see that the course is set but we're going nowhere."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Confirmed."
"To power up the drives you enter the command, 22) navset warp <speed> . For now set warp 1. Alternatively you could have selected 23) navset impulse <speed> for impulse speed."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Warp 1 sir"
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren interrupts, "I'm assuming the command is the same for impulse?"
Valow says, "Edmon, now type navinfo and you'll see that there's an ETA."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods, "ETA in 2 months, 11 days, 22 hours, 50 minutes and 16 seconds."
Valow nods, "Aye. But it's one or the other only, of course. So you have to wait til the warp drive is completely powered down before switching to warp. And vice versa." Then says, "For now, Serina drop us out of warp and set course for Kalandara."
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Secure from warp setting course for Kalandara, and now returning at warp 1, sir."
Valow nods, "The more power available, the faster it can sustain a higher warp. The End can hold warp 9.851 with its shields and weapons offline, for example."
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren nods.
Ensign Serina Amore stretches neck.
"Well that's the basics. Except for landing. So, Serina... fullscan, and then navscan Endeavour." He points at the ship outside the viewport.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Aye, sir." Ensign Serina Amore says, "Scan complete." Ensign Serina Amore asks, "Shall I dock her, sir?"
Valow says, "The last lesson is landing, 24) land <contact> , or to land at a specific place, 25) land <contact> on <specific location> . So land her at the Durango port." The Trill smiles, "And docking is specifically for space stations. The command is 26) engage dock at <contact> or 27) engage dock at <contact> at <specific location> .” He pauses a moment to take a breath before continuing, "But only ships runabout size or larger can dock. Fighters and shuttles need to land in a bay."
The ship flies into a shuttlebay onboard USS Endeavour NCC-82000 and gently touches down.
Ensign Serina Amore says, "Aye, sir"
Lieutenant J.G. Edmon Zoren resets power controls to landed.
