Joint Mission (All Military Personnel)
All military personnel will salute, but will take note that the most important rule of protocol is: Use Common Sense.
There are situations when a salute is unnecessary or may even put the rest of the crew in jeopardy.
Such situations include, but are not limited to:
- Certain informal situations
- Particular work situations.
- Red alert status
- Training
- When not in uniform
However, it is advised that you salute too often rather than not often enough. This being said, any member of the crew will be prosecuted for saluting if that salute endangered ship or crew.
- Saluting is mandatory when encountering a higher ranked member of the crew, no matter which military organization they belong to.
- The salute is to be rendered in the manner of one's own military organization
- The higher ranked officer may return the salute, acknowledge it with a nod or completely ignore it.
- Higher ranking crew-members are to be addressed either by their rank or by 'rekkhai' (OOC: for non-Rihannsu, the automatic translation of the text renders this as 'sir').
- Crew-members of equal rank are to be addressed either by their rank or by their name.
- Lower ranking officers are to be addressed either by their rank, their name or by Mr. followed by their name.
- The matter of saluting may be decided on a per case basis by each department head. However, contact with personnel from other departments will take place under the aforementioned rules.

When to salute
A Starfleet Officer shall only salute a superior officer when making an official report. He will walk to within two full paces of a standing officer, or within two full paces of an officers desk, present arms, and hold for the duration of the report until dismissed by the ranking officer.
It is expected courtesy to salute any flag officer of the pay grade O-7 and above, any time while passing, either aboard ship or otherwise. This address is not required when either officer is out of uniform though it is a sign of courtesy and respect to salute anyway.
A Starfleet Officer will salute at all times when passing within six paces of the flag of the United Federation of Planets, and is expected to always salute the President of the UFP or any Medal of Honor recipient.
Addressing an Officer
A superior officer shall always be addressed as "Sir." This applies to female officers as well as male, though female officers may request to be addressed as "Ma'am." An alternative form of this is to address a superior officer as their rank, i.e. "Yes, Captain." NOTE: You do NOT address senior NCOs as "Sir." See below.
Addressing Officer Groups
A junior officer will address a group of senior officers as "Gentlemen" regardless of the groups gender.
Addressing an NCO
A superior Non Commissioned Officer will always be addressed by their official title, i.e. "Yes, Chief Petty Officer." This may be shortened to "Yes, Chief" or "Yes, Petty Officer."
Proper Responses
When addressed by a superior officer, a Starfleet officer will answer in one of two ways. If asked a yes or no question, the officer will respond with "Yes, sir," or "No, sir," respectively. However, if the superior officer has issued direct orders, the junior officer will respond with "Aye, sir." This is to note that the junior officer has correctly understood the orders issued to him.
