Biography

Early Life

Lakahn Adelm was born in 2352 in the Singha labor camp on Bajor to parents Lakahn Driac and Lakahn Arine. It was in this camp where he would spend his early childhood, at the age of six Lakahn was put to work in the camp, his small frame being useful for working in more cramped areas than adults. His early education was informal, his mother and father teaching him at night, sacrificing some of their little rest periods for their son. He learned to read from samples his parents would scribble in whatever they could find and Cardassian propaganda signs in the camp. As he got older the Cardassians would work him harder. During this time Lakahn would witness many atrocities at the hands of the Cardassians: Bajorans suffering from malnutrition, being worked to death, or just outright executed. It was hard for Lakahn at this age to imagine a free life since he had never known it.

In 2357 the Ojarn cell of the Bajoran resistance raided the Singha camp, liberating Lakahn Adelm and his family among others. For the first time in his life Lakahn would taste a degree of freedom, though the Cardassians still oppressed his people and he would have to hide from them. Even though he was only 12 Lakahn picked up arms against the Cardassians, joining the same cell that liberated the camp. His father objected, but when his mother relented his father decided that if his son was joining so was he, so they joined the cell with his mother coming along to help cook for the cell. After some initial training to teach him how to shoot and guerilla tactics Lakahn and his father were going on missions with the cell.

Lakahn spent the rest of the First Occupation of Bajor with the Ojarn cell, eventually becoming a valued member of it. During this time his technical skills began to develop as he found new ways to use what little equipment they had against the Cardassians, and even began using the Cardassians' equipment against them. He would also make traps for his cell, using the local terrain to make them more effective. His traps helped the cell become more successful while keeping its members out of harms way. He became known as "The Hara" or just "Hara" - a cat native to Bajor - to his cell. By the time the Cardassians were driven from Bajor in 2369 Lakahn was 17.

After the Cardassians left the Bajorans began the task of rebuilding their world. As part of a program to compensate members of the resistance, the Provisional Government granted a plot of land to his family. The plot was not highly fertile, but it worked. His family built their home there, and it was here Lakahn spent the next few years. When not working on the farm, Lakahn would lend his services to the local town in helping rebuild their infrastructure. During this time Lakahn's sister, Shyma, was born and after her came his brother, Kannis. Lakahn was the oldest of his siblings by 18 years. While he cared for them deeply, this created a gap between them - to them he was more like a third parent than a sibling.

Then the Cardassians came again. After the Second Occupation began the old cells began reforming. Ojarn had passed away since the end of the last Occupation and his father had become too frail due to the lasting effects from the Singha camp and poor conditions during the resistance. Lakahn's mother and siblings staid back - his mother to care for his father, and his siblings were too young - while Lakahn left to fight the Cardassians again. He reformed his old cell, this time it became known as the Lakahn Cell. Most of its members were from the old Ojarn cell, and he continued using his tactics of traps against the Cardassians.

Several years later the Cardassians were finally driven away again and Lakahn returned home to the farm and his family, his siblings having grown older now. Lakahn felt guilty about leaving with his father's poor condition, but he felt bound to fight for Bajor as it was bigger than just him and his family - as the Vulcans say, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". He would not stay long, after the first occupation he had settled down and the Cardassians came back. After helping plant the crops for that season, Lakahn left again, this time to join Starfleet. With Bajor a protectorate of the Federation, he felt that by joining Starfleet he would be protecting his people and his family. Also he was feeling restless at home and needed a new purpose to guide him with the Cardassians gone again.

Starfleet Career

Lakahn took the entrance exam on Deep Space Nine, his evaluator commenting that he was 'Rough on the edges, but shows great potential". Once accepted Lakahn took a transport to Earth, enrolling in the next class. While at the academy Lakahn majored in Engineering with a minor in helm & navigation. He took an additional course in command, having qualified for it. Lakahn graduated Starfleet academy with no honors, although comments on his records from his instructors stated he would make a good officer.

Lakahn served in Starfleet for several years, eventually assigned to the USS Voyager for her cruise into the Delta Quadrant. His resourcefulness, it was noted, would come in handy being so far away from normal supply lines. During Voyager's time in the Delta Quadrant, Lakahn was assigned as the Deputy Chief Engineer, playing a role in keeping the ship repaired and maintained far away from supply lines and Starfleet drydocks.

Upon return to the Alpha Quadrant, Lakahn was transfered to the crew of Hellesport Station, along with several of his Voyager crewmembers, where he was promoted to the station rank of Captain and assigned as the Chief Engineering Officer.

Free Bajoran Government

Following the Klingon annexation of Bajor, Lakahn helped to organize resistance efforts on Hellesport Station, leading to his forced resignation from his posting as Chief Engineer. He was involved in the forming of Bajor's government in exile, the Free Bajoran Government, becoming the First Minister of the new government.
