Psychological Profile
Assessments
- Starfleet Academy: Initial Cadet Psychological Assessment
- A rather typical small-town boy, Natar seems to be very polite, very quiet, and quite a hard worker. He has made friends easily with his open, honest, and, really, rather pleasant attitude. What you see is what you get with this young man. However, it does appear that he does have a rather substantial self-esteem issue with regards to his class standing. It came up repeatedly in my interview with him and furthermore he feels he has to work 'twice as hard' to keep up with the other cadets. I've learned that he bunks alone as a result of Cadet Franz's withdrawal, and so my only recommendation at this time is to assign Natar a new roommate -- preferably one strong in academics -- at the earliest possible opportunity.
- Starfleet Academy: Initial Cadet Psychological Assessment - Addendum
- While on an unrelated visit to the Mars training facility, I had the opportunity to listen to Cadet Natar while he was leading his squad of trainees. Firstly, I will freely admit that I was surprised to learn that he had earned the leadership position early on in his training; from my initial interview, I did not expect him to have the self-confidence required. But having heard him in this setting I have to say he sounded like a completely different person than the one who was in my office just two months ago. It appears that he has none of the self-esteem problems that I observed while he is 'in action' (as it were). This may initially seem contradictory, but does follow from my previous observations; he does not doubt his skills as a Marine in the same way he doubts his academic abilities. All of this being said, my earlier recommendation still stands.
- Post-Incident Psychological Assessment - RE: CDT Arel Sonta'aar (KIA)
- I've been informed that 2LT Natar, has returned from his mandatory leave, and has conducted all of his required counseling sessions. However, my preliminary assessments show that he may not be completely over the incident on Europa where Cadet Sonta'aar was killed. While his problem is a concern that needs to be watched, it should pose little problem in the short term and, with proper counseling, almost no danger to his long-term stability. My recommendation is that he be approved to return to active duty.

Biography
Early Life
Natar ch'Ralev was born to andorian immigrants residing near the village of Strathblane in central Scotland on Earth. Despite being one of only five andorians in the area -- his parents being the other four -- he started his life like most other young boys in the community. He helped his birth mother, seed father, and donor father out on the farm they owned (his seed mother held a commission in the Federation Merchant Marine Service), he avoided his house chores as best he could, and spent the rest of his time with friends exploring the lush, green Scottish countryside around the village.
Things changed for him after his 6th grade annual school trip. The entirety of the local elementary class was taken to the nearest public transporter site -- 17km away in Glasgow -- bound for Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco.
The trip was just like the one nearly every Earth and Luna student takes at one point or another in their academic lives. It included a visit to the Starfleet Headquarters building, portions of the Starfleet Academy grounds, and the planet-side portion of the Starfleet Fleet Museum.
It was at this last site where something was stirred within the boy. Walking around the area, filled with relics of terran, and later Federation, space exploration history, Natar's love for space was born.
Upon his return to Strathblane, Natar immediately began a campaign to persuade his parents to take him to see the rest of the Fleet Museum located above Earth in the Orbital Annex of the museum. He had to wait until the farming season was over that year, but once he got there -- somewhere between the Constitution-class and the Excelsior-class -- he just knew his fate was sealed. At the impressionable age of 11, the boy absolutely knew that he just had to become a pilot of one of these majestic creatures of space.
For the next five years, his one goal was to gain entry into Starfleet Academy; taking only two types of breaks from his studies -- save his regular chores, of course. The first was to construct scale models. He didn't discriminate on what he built; from the first Vulcan warp vessel to the latest in Starfleet designs, he was tireless. He eventually filled his room with them, which then resulted in his donor father building him a special display room for the models in the basement of the family farmhouse. The second type of break was to exercise -- it didn't even matter what he did. Be it running along the cobblestone streets of the older parts of the town, mountain biking in the hilly highlands, or pumping 'iron' in the makeshift gym his parents created for him in the old hay barn of the farm, if the andorian didn't get some type of physical activity in daily, he felt that his day wasn't complete. Indeed, Natar could often be found awake before dawn in order to get in some type of exercise before he started his daily required duties on the farmstead.
Far too soon though -- in all of his parents' opinion -- the time came for the boy to visit the local recruiting office, but when he arrived, he was greeted not by a Starfleet officer, but instead by Master Sergeant Liu Shangkun a proud veteran of the Starfleet Marine Corps (SFMC). That initial visit with the recruiter was four hours long; the two men discussed many things over the course of that meeting, and spent countless hours more discussing countless other things on their subsequent visits. Mostly, however, Shangkun and Natar discussed all of the young sentient's enlistment options -- not simply the ones he had daydreamed about since childhood.
Eventually -- and with no small amount of resistance from those childhood daydreams -- the young andorian discovered that what he'd always thought he'd wanted wasn't necessarily what he would be best suited for. And indeed, it was through these conversations with the patient Master Sergeant that Natar discovered that what he'd always thought he wanted wasn't necessarily what he actually wanted.
Several months and a strong friendship with the veteran marine later, Natar submitted his application to enroll in the Starfleet Marine Corps officer training program. Three -- unbelievably long -- months following that, his acceptance letter arrived from the registrar of Starfleet Academy and the andorian immediately began packing his things.
Starfleet Academy
At the Academy, Natar's cheerful demeanor and easy-going rural attitudes made him popular among his classmates but, nevertheless, he struggled academically in most of his classes. Though able to grasp most of the concepts and materials taught, it often took him longer than the other students to do get control of the 'nitty-gritty' details.
As a result, many of his nights after lights-out were spent under his bed covers with a palm beacon in hand, pouring over a textbook. Bunking alone in his first year, because of another cadet's early drop-out, this did not prove to be a problem, but for the remainder of his time at the Academy this personal habit was a major annoyance to his (brilliant) bajoran roommate, Jaro Tusk -- a Starfleet cadet majoring in geology.
However, during his last two years at the training facility, during the SFMC-specific portion of his training, Natar and the other marine cadets quickly found themselves on equal footing as professors and instructors drilled into them the centuries-old attitude of the Corps: 'Every marine a rifleman.' That is to say, no matter what military occupational specialty or career path an SFMC cadet subsequently takes, he or she should always be proficient in the most basic function of a Starfleet marine: soldiering.
And in this latter role, the andorian found that he had something of an aptitude, earning a squad leader position early in the academic program. That being said, due to his grade point average the young cadet never qualified for any of the "elite" programs that Starfleet Academy offered.
Secretly, he often felt that he was better Marine -- and oftentimes a better person -- than a good number of those who were actually in such programs.
In his final year, he served his cadet cruise aboard an aging New Orleans-class frigate, the USS Thomas Paine (NCC-65530) patrolling along Tzenkethi Coalition space. [[Officer Cadet|Officer-cadet Natar served with the 3d Marine Strike Group, 2d Division, 6th Regiment, 2d Battalion -- otherwise known as the 'Hydran Hussars' -- as a temporary platoon leader. However, with galactic tensions rising, the Hussars were reassigned to Deep Space 2, located on one edge of the UFP-KE neutral zone, and their assignment changed from one of support to one of preparing for war. With conflict between the two great groups almost imminent, Academy administrators felt that the risk to the cadets assigned to the battalion was too great and pulled them all from their respective cadet cruises three months early -- much to the frustration of the andorian and his fellow assignees.
Though he was (barely) in the middle of his class when he graduated (three months early), Natar did receive four silver cords for highest grades achieved in Piloting 101: Basic Shuttlecraft, Military History 312: Comparative Combat Strategies, Marksmanship, and Combat Tactics 433: Advanced Infantry Tactics. The end result of his performance - and, perhaps more importantly, his leadership skills -- was an offer to skip an immediate field assignment with the rest of his peers in order to attend the Starfleet Joint Strategic and Tactical Training (STRATT) course at Tranquility Base on Luna.
He didn't let the personnel officer finish the offer before eagerly accepting.
Early Assignments
His eleven months at STRATT were a time of tangible joy for the newly minted 2nd Lieutenant; surrounded by other eager and talented Starfleet and Starfleet Marine Corps officers, he reveled in receiving further training in one of the few subjects he had complete confidence in.
Again it was early on in the training that the course instructors began to notice that the young andorian not only had an ability to soldier, but he also had a way with the other students; soon afterwards he was again bucked to squad leader.
In short order, Natar's team led the five others in terms of both simulation scores and grades -- the latter aspect in his own case made possible by Natar's heavy reliance on the help of his squad mates.
Never one to waste such a resource, the SFMC took note of these abilities in the andorian and, following his completion of the course, asked him to return to Starfleet Academy, this time as a Junior Instructor. When this offer was made to him, the 22-year old took pause to consider it well. Though the two prestigious assignments would be looked upon favorably by SFMC brass, nearly a year into his career, the young marine had yet to receive an actual deep space or duty assignment -- things he, and most others, joined Starfleet for.
In the end, however, he was convinced that he could help others learn not only the complicated and evolving dynamics involved in being a Marine, but the sheer joy of it as well.
And despite his early doubts, Natar's time as an instructor was quite enjoyable. Not only was he able to gain confidence in himself by teaching combat infantry tactics to marine recruits, but he also got to spend a great deal of time visiting his family on weekends, holidays (and those nights when he didn't feel like cooking) -- Strathblane having gained its parishes' new public transporter site.
This happiness however was short-lived.
Only nine months into the assignment, during hostile environment training on Europa, a young cadet slipped and fell into a deep crevasse on the Jovian moon. She was killed instantly when her environmental suit tore open. Though the subsequent investigation, and mandatory JAG hearings, cleared the 2nd Lieutenant of all fault, the young andorian took the death personally and requested a transfer the furthest away from Earth that he could find.
