New to Holotrek?
Well here are some frequently asked questions, interesting features, and ways to find/make RP!
But before we get to those, let's start with the basics.
Holotrek is a Star Trek themed online roleplaying game. Most players play as a member of the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, or the Romulan Empire, though other factions do exist. HT largely follows Star Trek: TNG canon, but begins to diverge slightly around events of the first season of Star Trek: DS9.
Though there are some admin driven plots, the game is primarily role play and character driven, meaning that you will create plots and stories with admin support.

General FAQ
Q: Is Holotrek a MUD/MUSH/MOO?
A: No. HoloTrek is a custom codebase developed on top of a very old release of Coldcore. The database driver is Genesis, which is maintained by the Cold Project. As such, Holotrek is not to be played as a conventional MUD or MOO; all players are primarily role players and should only use code and coded items to highlight the gaming experience. Treating HT like a regular MUD will have, generally negative, consequences for your character.
Q: How does leveling work here?
A: It doesn't. Holotrek is a roleplaying based game, and its focus is more on developing and playing your character than progression. There is no leveling and there is no ultimate winning.
Q: Do I need to put my coded skills on my profile page?
A: If you want to, you absolutely can. If you don't want to, you absolutely don't have to.
Q: Who are the Administrators on Holotrek? How can I contact them?
A: There are basically two levels of admin on Holotrek, Directors and Q. Directors serve as the intermediaries between the players and the Q, and should be who you contact with anything you want an admin for. This can be done either by paging one directly, or by using the in-game mailing system and sending a message to *dir.
Q: But what about the Q? Can't I contact them as well?
A: In general, the Directors will decide what matters need to be brought to the attention of the Q, and they will contact them on your behalf.
Q: Can I be a Q or a Q character?
A: No.
Q: How can I find people to RP with?
A: Use '@whom' to see who is online and where they are generally located. Then ask the computer where they are specifically - assuming you're in that same general location and there's a computer there - 'say computer, where is <user>' (e.g. 'say computer, where is Valow?').
Q: What if they don't want to RP with me?
A: Be more interesting.
Q: What's a TP?
A: Read '@help TP'
Q: How do I submit a TP?
A: Read '@help TP Application'
Q: How do I get items in Holotrek?
A: There are many coded and functional items (e.g. weapons, scanners, commbadges) and you need one of these to actually use one. They can be obtained ICly through a variety of means (many requiring RP). But some items are only going to be found in your head, as many RP items (PADDs, viewers, food, etc) in the the game are not coded; the system is primarily intended to facilitate RP.
Q: How do I use items in Holotrek?
A: Help files are written for nearly every coded item in the game. Look for them (e.g. '@help tricorder,' '@help phaser,' etc).
Q: What's the best link ever?!
A: The Holotrek Help Index is one of the fastest ways to find out anything about (just about) everything in Holotrek.
Useful Tips FAQ
Q: How do turbolifts work?
A: 'say deck <deck #>' (e.g. 'say deck 1')
Q (Sort of): Help! I'm stuck in a turbolift!
A: 'say open'
Q: My teammate was incapacitated, how do I move him/her?
A: You can move unconscious characters by typing 'carry <name>' or 'drag <name>'.
Q: Why am I bleeding?
A: If you don't remember being shot at or beat up, you probably walked into a forcefield. Head to a sickbay.
Q: I have bought a passcard, but it's asking me to lock it with a code? What's up?
A: Passcards are useless without codes being put on them, to do that you need a card reader - found in some replicators. To work with a container, shuttle, quarters, etc, the code on the passcard and the code set in the desired item, vessel, etc, must match! For on how to operate your cardreader and passcard read for '@help card reader' and '@help passcard'.
Q: How do I get around in HT?
A: Most planets have automated shuttles (IPS) which fly at regular times, you find out when by finding and looking at the schedule, if you want a more controlled approach you can use the rental shuttles by inserting a credit chip into one, the rental (as of the time of this writing) costs 500 credits for 4 hours. Alternatively, you can save up and purchase a personal vessel or join an org that allows you access to spacecraft (though be sure you have permission before using one!).
Q: How do I use the Holodeck?
A: Read '@help holodeck'.
Q: How do I interact with the Holodeck?
A: The holodeck is there solely for RP purposes, there is no actual interaction with the scenery or any objects written in the description. Use your imaginations!
Trading FAQ
Q: How do I become a trader?
A: First, refer to the handy, dandy Trading page here on the wiki.
Q (Sort of): Help! How do I buy and sell goods from the market consoles? My backpack doesn't seem to work!
A: First buy a cargo container (the smallest being the cargo box - which can be carried by hand if not too heavily loaded) then, while manning the console and a credit chip is inserted, use 'container <container label>' to set the container, and finally, buy and sell with 'buy/sell <item> <amount>'.
Q: How do I carry those really heavy containers?
A: You'll need a hoverpad, they can be bought at some replicators. Read '@help hoverpad'.
Space Travel FAQ
Q: How do I learn how to fly a spaceship?
A: First, refer to the handy, dandy Flight Training Transcript page here on the wiki.

A: Assuming you have access to the shuttle, you must open the hatch by inserting a valid passcard by typing 'insert passcard in <shuttle name>' (e.g. 'insert passcard in Galileo').
Q: What are WCCF, SIF and IDF?
A: Those would be the Warp Core Containment Field, Structual Integrity Field and Inertial Dampening Field, respectively. Each are VERY important and those must be powered when flying - unless you have a death wish.
Q: How do I use consoles (e.g. Pilot's Console, Captain's Chair, Ops Console, etc.)?
A: You first have to 'man' the console by typing 'man <console name>', then you can use the commands listed in '@help <console name>' (e.g. '@help Pilot's console' or '@help Captain's Chair' or '@help operations').
