Homeworld Qo'noS, the native name for the Klingon homeworld, is a planet of the star Cygnus and the site of the Imperial Empire's capital First City, veng wa'Dich. It is the second planet of the system and is nearly one and a half times the size of Earth. Qo'noS is the only world in its five planet system which was inherently capable of sustaining life. On all other occupied planets, Klingons had to use large amounts of relatively sophisticated technology to live there. The surface of Qo'noS is a huge lone landmass surrounding a vast salty ocean. A passing asteroid severely tilted the planet's rotational axis, inducing wild seasonal changes, a turbulent atmosphere and extremes of both warm and frigid weather across its varied surface. The capital city has remained neutral to both sides during the Empire's many historic civil wars, and even harbored the houses Sela and Movar. Qo'noS is sometimes Standardized as "Kronos" by non-native Klingon speakers.

Geological information from Qo'noS suggests that the world was once covered entirely in lush and wet rain forest before the passing of the large asteroid which altered its axis. This asteroid is also thought to have caused enormous pressure in the planet itself that led to disastrous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the scars of which are still visible today. Fossilized remains in the underground water pockets and in the lava rock show that a form of Klingon existed before the time of the asteroid. These Klingons bear the same basic genetic markings as present-day Klingons, except without the Imperial mutations, which, as is well known, bear no phenotypic resemblance to most of the rest of the life on the planet. It is for these reasons that it is thought that the Klingon people were seeded on Qo'noS, possibly by The Preservers.
