Biography
Early Years
Stephen Mark Braun was born to Daniel Earnest and Betty Theresa Braun on April 14, 2368. Stephen was always gazing at the stars, and being a 'Starfleet brat' he always knew that when the time came he would do his best to join Starfleet. Stephen's parents were Starfleet Officers, and he spent his formative years travelling the galaxy while they studied it. These years spent aboard starships and on remote outposts gave him a great opportunity to experience life as an explorer.
He always seemed to make friends easily, and being an only child with your parents serving aboard a science vessel made that very important since there weren't many other children around. His best friend growing up was Jeff. Their friendship started on the USS Cochrane (NCC-59318) when they met in a turbolift as their families were reporting to their new quarters. Since that moment, the two were inseparable and always kept in close contact. over the years, Stephen and Jeff were a source of friendly competition, always pushing the other to excel. It was this competition and constant drive to succeed that gave Stephen his greatest edge when it came time to apply to Starfleet Academy.
As Stephen grew aboard starships and various planet-side postings, he began to come very familiar with his parent's work. They specialized in classifying spatial anamolies, and he found their work fascinating. His mother especially would often ask his opinion on what he thought certain readings meant. This exposure gave Stephen a fairly good scientific understanding. Stephen's father saw that while science interested him, he needed more. It was at this time that he began researching sending Stephen to live with his uncle Mark, a former Starfleet Captain. His mother would have none of this however, so the issue was dropped for the time being.
Teen Years
When Stephen was 17 his parents were serving on board the USS Tsiolkovsky (NCC-53911-A). Though life on a science vessel was more than appealing to Stephen, the Tsiolkovsky was going to be conducting dangerous research along the Romulan Neutral Zone and his mother began to agree that it would be best that he stay on Earth with his uncle and prepare for the Academy. Stephen was not immediately pleased about leaving his parents, but uncle Mark was a brilliant man and in many ways inspired Stephen. His uncle spent most of his time telling stories of when he was in Starfleet. Uncle Mark was a helmsman in his early days in Starfleet, and he claimed that if he hadn't been a helmsman he never would have been able to make it to the rank of Captain and command the USS Hathaway (NCC-2593). "Helmsmen are on the bridge, and that's where they learn from the best to lead the rest" he would always say, and it was his stories and passion that influenced Stephen into becoming a pilot.
Stephen made another very close friend while staying with his uncle, and her name was Melody. Melody didn't much care for his ambitions of joining Starfleet, but she did enjoy looking at the stars with him. Her father was a diplomat and her mother had died when she was just an infant. She spent her childhood feeling neglected because her father was always gone, leaving her with her grandmother who lived close to Stephen's Uncle Mark. It was clear to Stephen that as much as he grew to care for her, he could only love her from afar and never told Melody of his feelings for her before he left for Starfleet Academy.
Starfleet Academy
Stephen left his uncle's for the Academy full of eager excitement. He wrote almost daily for the first few months, making sure to keep his parents, his uncle Mark, and Melody all informed of his progress as he adapted to Starfleet Academy. He was so thankful that Jeff was there with him. The familiar face helped him to deal with being away from his parents, his uncle, and Melody. Jeff's presence also helped Stephen stay sharp. There was no way Stephen wasn't going to graduate at the top of his class with Jeff there pushing him.
During Initial Officer Training, he stood out as a peer leader. His performance during the Leadership Camp was exemplary, and his mentoring kept a cadet from dropping out. Cadet Irving was sure she had made a mistake. She could never expect to get through this. Stephen took her under his wing, helping her with her duties and showing her shortcuts and better ways to do things. By the time they graduated she was a stellar performer and graduated with honors. When they went on to specialist training, they both majored in Helm and Navigation. Stephen chose to minor in Operations as well, since he was always fascinated by the administration of starships and hoped some day to have a command.
Cadet Cruise
Served aboard the USS Dauntless (NCC-74214) for his Cadet Cruise. During this time, he was commended on several occasions for his quick-thinking and ability to generate alternative solutions to large problems. He was quoted as saying "If you take one big problem, and break it into smaller more manageable problems, most any obstacle can be overcome". This way of thinking led him to come up with the idea of an independent Tachyon Detection Grid comprised of modified probes deployed with the help of Lt. Commander Zoren on the perimeter of Deep Space Nine.
Service Aboard USS Dauntless
Upon completion of his Cadet Cruise in November of 2368, Captain Jason Ikas approved Braun's request to remain aboard the Dauntless as a Junior Operations Officer. While assigned to the Dauntless, Braun continued to seek out additional responsibilities and quickly rose through the rank of Lieutenant. His postings aboard the Dauntless included Deputy Chief Operations Officer under the late Lieutenant Commander Andaryn Valow. After his mentor's untimely death in the spring of 2390, Braun was asked to step in and become the Chief Operations Officer. While he first felt he had a hard time filling those shoes, he eventually came to terms with the method of his promotion. Every desk or office he has had since carries a picture of the Trill that taught him what it meant to be an Operations Officer. Notable actions during his time on the Dauntless are well documented in the commendation section of his personnel file.
Service Aboard USS Voyager
The joint mission between the Federation, the Romulan Star Empire, and the Klingon Empire to the Delta Quadrant aboard the Voyager was nothing short of catastrophic from the beginning. Shortly after their arrival, Commander Frederic Larsen was incapacitated leaving the Executive Officer erei'Riov t'Aegis in command. Braun continued to serve as Chief Operations Officer aboard the Voyager, also serving as Second Officer. Throughout the volatile command structure, Braun was eventually asked to serve as Executive Officer alongside erei'Riov t'Aegis. In what most Starfleet Officers would consider a coup, the Tal Shiar officer Theirrn Aerv'saihlan i-Ra'tleihfi tr'Llhaenn demanded t'Aegis' resignation and placed khre'Riov Shihaya ir-Apnex t'Khnialmnae in command. While the woman holds the rank equivalent to a Starfleet Rear Admiral, she retained the remaining command structure keeping Braun as Executive Officer. The majority of his posting on Voyager has been spent dealing with the intricacies of interaction between the three disparate crews that have had to come together as one in the isolated space of the Delta Quadrant. While on Voyager, Braun rekindled his romance with prior Dauntless crew mate Doctor Ngaire Guimaraes. Not long after the collapse of the wormhole that led them to the Delta Quadrant, Ngaire revealed to him her true self -- Cardassian Nysra Tolmak. As her surgical alterations began to wear off, she reverted to her Cardassian form. Despite her change in appearance, Braun assured her that he still very much loved her and proposed to her. They were wed in a small ceremony aboard the holodeck.
Personality
Under most conditions, Stephen is bright, cheerful, and approachable. In professional situations he tends to be arrogant to the point of cocky. He knows his job and he knows it well. If challenged, he enjoys the opportunity to show others how superior he is. He has excellent critical thinking skills, and knows how to operate 'outside of the box'. He doesn't buy into the no-win scenario, and tends to take an optomistic view on things. He tends to look at situations with a bit of wit and wisdom, easing tension and solving problems. He speaks his mind to his peers and tactfully questions his superiors, seeking responsibility and taking responsibility for his actions. He is very military minded, respects discipline and bearing, and exudes professionalism. When meeting a superior officer for the first time he will snap to a rigid attention and speak minimally until the officer puts him at ease. When dealing with peers, he will initially be reserved and curt. Once he has gotten a feel for someone, Stephen warms up considerably.
